Modern Pebble Garden Design — Nad Al Sheba, Dubai
Project overview
Not every garden feature needs to be planted. Sometimes the most striking element in a villa garden is the hardscaping itself — and that’s exactly what this Nad Al Sheba project was built around.
The client had a long, well-maintained garden bed running along the side of their villa, framed by neatly clipped hedges and an established olive tree. Rather than fill it with more planting, they wanted a feature that would stand out as a design statement on its own, something modern, geometric, and low-maintenance.
The result is a black and white pebble mosaic laid out in a bold diamond pattern, framed with steel edging and bordered by agave and cactus planting. It’s the kind of feature that changes how the whole garden reads, without competing with the greenery around it.
Design concept

The choice of black and white was deliberate. Against the soft greens of the hedging, the olive tree, and the agave borders, the monochrome pattern reads as architectural rather than decorative — more like an outdoor floor than a flower bed.
The surrounding garden, manicured ficus hedging in tiered rows, an established olive tree, and a stone-clad raised planter, was all retained and built around. The new feature slots into the existing garden rather than replacing any of it.
Installation process
Pebble features like this require careful preparation to look right and stay looking right. The team excavated the bed to a consistent depth, laid a weed-suppressant membrane across the full area, and installed the steel edging to define every section of the pattern before any pebbles went down.
Each colour zone was then filled by hand, with pebbles placed and leveled section by section to keep the diamond edges sharp and the surface level. Drip irrigation lines were run beneath the membrane to serve the agave and cactus border without disturbing the pebble surface.
This groundwork is what keeps a pebble garden looking sharp for years rather than months — without a proper membrane and edging, pebbles sink, mix together, and weeds come through within a season.
