Villa Garden Transformation — Jumeirah, Dubai

Before & After

Project overview

Some gardens just need a plan. This Jumeirah villa had established trees, flowering shrubs, and a beautifully built boundary wall, but the space between them was bare compacted sand with no structure, no lawn, and no real reason to spend time outside.

The client wanted a garden they could actually use: somewhere to walk in the morning, sit in the evenings, and feel proud of when guests arrived. What we designed and built over twelve days became exactly that.

Stage 01

What we started with

When we first assessed the site, the garden had real potential. Mature trees were already providing shade. Established flowering plants — hollyhocks, bougainvillea, cosmos — were growing along the borders. The brick and stone boundary walls had genuine character.

But the ground itself was raw sand. No defined paths, no lawn area, and the existing plants had no proper edging or structure around them. Our brief: transform the space without removing what was already working.

Stage 02

Setting out the layout

Before any surface went down, we spent time on layout. A gently curving central pathway was chosen over a straight line — it suits the proportions of a long narrow garden corridor and creates a more natural, relaxed feel as you walk through.

The edging was set in concrete and curved by hand, brick by brick. This is the part most people never see once the garden is finished, but it determines whether the final result looks considered or cobbled together.

Stage 03

The stone pathway

The pathway surface is natural stone laid in a random pattern, individually hand-selected and fitted on site. We used a mixed-tone stone that picks up the warm colours of the villa’s brickwork without matching it too closely.

The stone runs the full length of the garden and curves at two points to follow the natural line between the trees. It opens out near the pergola seating area at the rear, a wider landing point for the outdoor dining furniture.

The stone is set on a mortar bed and sealed to reduce water absorption and staining. In a Dubai garden that sees heavy summer dust and occasional rain, a sealed surface stays cleaner and lasts significantly longer than unsealed stone.

Stage 04

Artificial grass installation

The lawn areas on either side of the pathway are artificial grass. For a garden used primarily in the evenings and on weekends, and for a client who travels regularly, artificial grass was the practical choice. It looks excellent year-round regardless of irrigation schedules.

The grass we installed has a natural variance in blade colour, not the flat, uniform bright green that reads as obviously artificial. Installation involved excavating the existing sand, laying a compacted sub-base, installing drainage membrane, and cutting and seaming the rolls to fit the curved layout precisely.

Stage 05

Planting & irrigation

Existing border plants were retained where they were established and healthy. Drip irrigation lines were re-routed to serve both the retained planting and new additions, with emitters placed correctly at root level. New border planting was kept deliberately low to keep sightlines open and let the stone and lawn do the visual work.

Thinking about your own garden?

Every Dubai villa garden is different. We design around what you already have and how you actually want to use the space, not a standard template.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most standard villa garden projects, including pathways, lawn, edging, and planting, take between 7 and 14 working days depending on the size of the garden and complexity of the design. This Jumeirah project was completed in 12 days from site start to handover.
For most Dubai villa gardens, artificial grass is a practical and attractive choice. It performs consistently across extreme summer temperatures, requires no irrigation, and handles family use without the bare patches and seasonal maintenance that natural grass demands. Modern products look significantly more natural than those available a decade ago, particularly the mid-pile options we use with natural blade colour variance.

Yes, wherever existing plants are established and healthy, we design around them rather than removing them. Mature trees in particular are valuable assets in a Dubai garden and take many years to replace. Our approach is always to work with what is already growing well.
We work across all Dubai villa communities including Jumeirah, Arabian Ranches, Emirates Hills, The Villa, Mirdif, Al Barsha, Nad Al Sheba, and surrounding areas. Contact us to discuss your location and project.
